Company's Mission Statement: " The Walt Disney Company's objective is to be one of the world's leading producers and providers of entertainment and information, using its portfolio of brands to differentiate its content, services, and consumer products. The company's primary financial goals are to maximize earnings and cash flow, and to allocate capital toward growth initiatives that will drive long-term shareholder value."
Founded in 1923, the Walt Disney Company is one with a long, rich history. The company began as simply a film studio, but has definitely branched out since the days of Snow White. Under what is now Walt Disney Pictures, the Walt Disney Company now runs Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Touchstone Pictures, and Hollywood Pictures. In addition to its film studios, the Walt Disney Company owns many more media companies. Currently, they own Disney Channel, ABC, ABC Family, and ESPN. They also have a radio station, Radio Disney, and the Disney Store, a store found at many malls across the country featuring merchandise based on Disney's movies and television shows. The Walt Disney Company also owns theme parks, cruises, and resorts across the entire globe.
The Walt Disney Company has plenty of evidence of conglomeratization, globalization, media synergy, horizontal integration, and vertical integration. Since the Disney company owns theme parks, film studios, television channels, stores, etc., it is clear that it has conglomeratization because it dips into so many different businesses. The different theme parks spread from Tokyo to Orlando and their films have done very well in foreign countries, clear evidence of globalization for the Walt Disney Company. There is also evidence of media synergy within the company. One example is with the movie The Lion King. When the film was released, so was the soundtrack, advertisements on their networks as well as other networks, and merchandise ranging from plushes to sippy-cups. By using all of these elements, they were able to make much more off of the film than they would have been able to make had they just sold tickets. Disney often uses "celebrity endorsements" to help bring in the dough as well. For The Lion King, they featured the voice of Elton John on the film's soundtrack in order to make even more money off of the film, then did the same thing with Phil Collins on the Tarzan soundtrack. By adding in all of these elements and creating this synergy, they are able to offer more to the consumer. Their horizontal integration is seen by the different television stations. They own Disney Channel, ABC, ABC Family, and ESPN, all of which are the same media element, but appeal to audiences of several different demographics. Their vertical integration is seen just by how many different elements there are to the company. The elements include studio entertainment, parks and resorts, merchandise, and the media networks.
